‘My Sister…’
‘This is my sister, Vera Coffey who left home at 17 years of age and travelled to England in 1957 to train as a Nurse. She had originally worked in Williams and Woods. Some of her pals had answered an ad in the newspaper from hospitals in England looking for trainee nurses. She was the first of our family to leave home and emigrate. Other girls from Cabra West sailed to England with Vera, I remember one of them was from Broombridge. She had to send her suitcase back home to her mother because it was the only one the family had. The woman who lived next door to us made a coat for my sister from one that she herself didn’t need anymore. My sister is 61 years living in England…’
