Joseph Elmes front row and fourth from the right lived on St Jarlath’s Road in Cabra. Joseph was a member of the Irish Citizen Army and was with the group who attacked Dublin Castle during the 1916 Rising under Captain Sean Connolly. He also fought in Dame Street and the G.P.O. Joseph was arrested after the Rising and interned in Frongoch POW Camp in Wales. Upon his eventual release Joseph resumed membership of the Citizen Army. At the time of the Treaty he took the Republican side and was interned in Gormanston Military Barracks. After his Requiem Mass in the Church of Christ the King in Cabra Joseph was laid to rest in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.
