A CABRA WEST GENTLEMAN…
In 1956 my sister Vera left her job in Williams and Woods and travelled to England to train as a nurse. In Dublin she cycled to and from work each day. Most evenings she cycled home to Cabra West with Harry Hardy who lived on Swilly Road. Whenever Vera and her pals went to see the Blue Clavon playing Arthur would always leave the stage and take her up for a dance. When Arthur learned of Vera’s plans to emigrate he bought her a Prayer Book and signed it inside for her, wishing her well for the future. Vera never forgot how kind and friendly Harry was to her or how much of a Gentleman he was. She still has that Prayer Book to this day and still speaks very fondly of him…
