A VERY HAPPY CABRA EASTER TO YOU ALL…

HAPPY EASTER…

As kids we used to tell terrible lies altogether and especially on Easter Sunday. You see, every kid in the neighbourhood used to brag about how many Easter Eggs they got. Well we Coffey’s always got at least four eggs each, depending on who was telling the story or who they were telling it to. The first egg we got was a boiled egg that the Da’ would draw a funny face on and write your name on it as well. There’d be a great big pot with boiling water in it on the gas stove and all the eggs for our breakfast would be swirling around in it. We’d all be gawking in to see if we could spot the egg with our name on it and you’d let out a big roar as soon as you’d see it. The boiled egg was of course for our breakfast. Then it’d be off to ten o’clock Mass with a clean shirt, a spit in your hair from the Ma’ and your shoes all polished up. I’m sure the Priest said that Mass as slow as he could on purpose knowing that us kids were only interested in getting home as quickly as we could to our chocolate Easter Eggs. Sometimes we’d get a big egg in a box or one sitting on a mug all wrapped in cellophane paper and tied with a red ribbon. So that was two eggs so far. Now the Da’ always brought home a big box of little marshmallow eggs from work on the Saturday and we’d get two of these as well. So that was four eggs we got for Easter. Some of me pals would be bullin when I’d say I got four eggs for Easter. And of course we had to keep the coloured silver paper off the big egg for the nun in school. We’d spend ages pressing it out and folding it nice and neat because it was being sent out to the ‘Black Babies’ in Africa. Now they never told us what the little black babies did with it and we certainly never saw any of it in a Tarzan picture on the Cabra Grand. So there you have it, Easter memories…
