Another One Bites The Dust
Another one of our old favourites bites the dust. Woolworths Stores are officially closing all of their shops for business by the 5th of January 2009. Do you remember the one in Henry Street where the woman in the cafe poured the tea everywhere except into the mugs? You could buy everything here for Christmas, Easter, Birthday’s, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. They had almost every part for the ould bicycle. They had sweets galore and more besides. Like Hector Grey they gave great bargains to the people of Dublin in hard times. We pay tribute to the staff and management of Woolworths who served us well over many years. And now they join Hector Grey, Frawleys, The Blackrock, Sloans, Pims, the Pillar Cafe, the Carlton, Nelson’s Pillar, the Ambassador, the Wax Works Museum, the Pawn Shop, Mc Bierney’s, the Adelphi, the Merville Dairy, the Six Penny Wafer, Findlater’s and so many others who have gone before them, never to return. A good chunk of O’Connell Street is due to go next. A whole section across from the Gresham Hotel is due for demolition. There is also some talk of changing the interior of the GPO at some stage. Hold onto your memories, they might try and change them next. Once again, farewell and thank you to Woolworths.
