Hello Martin , Jo ,Tony, Willie, Rita, Shay and everyone else.
Long time no see, as the saying goes. I have no words to describe my absence. It must be at least five years since my last post. I have been in my new home for over five years now. All is fine and at last I now have time on my hands again. The nine grand children are all growing fast. The oldest one is Ben who is nineteen year old and Charlie is the youngest at Seven years old. with five more in between those ages.
My thanks to Jo who always remembers me in her posts. I hope you are doing well and all of your family are well including your sisters and brothers.
I was shocked Martin to hear of your heart problem. You had better take care and get plenty of the maid service which you richly deserve. I have been reading up on all the stories you have added this year. Amazing tales by you and no doubt you still have plenty more in that computer brain box you certainly still have. I will be in touch again soon. Take care everyone. Mary H T.

    Hello all.
Think some things just head off out to the cloud.
    Then maybe over the rainbow
Just a little activity on here now and then
Maybe I’ll make a jam sambo

To all who have aches or pains
There is no doubt our health is our wealth
    Better go eat my sambo
Then wash all the nice Delph

I mentioned some old cabra West games
To my family and friends this week
The grandkids thought I was bonkers
Told them we never bored or gave cheek

They loved some of the games
They know how to play ball
    Asking about family history
They wondered how we survived at all.

    We all agreed about progress
    Technology and so many things
The turn of the centuries seem to go so fast
Like revolving doors a blast from the past

Like diamonds and gems rare and fine
The stuff of castles and kings
There’s no finer treasure in all this world
Than my soulmate and chisslers heartstrings.

So long it’s been good to know ya
Woody Guthrie sang to his hearts content
Much of his life he busked for a living
Walking miles or on trains he went

Oh the times they are a changing
So sang Bob Joan and others
From blue grass to green grass
Number one on the charts could shudder

    Amazing how Alzheimer’s can steal
The vibrant life and all we feel
But it didn’t take the music needle
    Or turntable thread thats real

    My sister’s are living proof
That music is deep in the brain
You just pull on the heart strings
    To sing together again.

From the dust bowl and great depression
You can recall every note or song
From swing and jazz to rock and roll
Ballads pop rock or rap any Clapton song

    Beethoven Bach any musicians art
Alzheimer’s won’t Rob you of this
    We have backbone and brains
    musical heart strings total bliss.

    Alzheimer’s won’t take me out
When I turn off my Little light
    Music will brighten my day
Perfect harmony will sound on my way

Arrivals and departures are as regular as day
We come and go we rest and play
Music blasting as we clean our homes
Summer fun in the garden among the stones

    Devoted sisters come to visit
They sing and dance and bring gifts
    Alzheimer’s included family close by
Farewell to all the last song is nigh.

    Dedicated to all my siblings.
Music is the making of all heartstrings.

    A friend

    I went to say farewell
    To celebrate a friend’s life
To hug and support his wife
He was their joy and light

    A child’s tribute was a song
    A brother played his guitar
I sat at the back in the chapel
With friends who traveled from afar

This beautiful girls voice broke down
As she reached the chorus in tears
I lifted my voice to sing
    Remembering so many good years

She raised her head a little higher
    Our voices blended awhile
Till she could sing again for her poppa
Then our eyes met and she smiled

I gently faded out my voice
As she wiped away her tears
    Restoring her strength
    With a voice so clear

I bet her poppa was smiling too
As she sang his favorite song
    His preacher said remember eternally
Tho from us he’s not long gone

As I was leaving the mortuary chapel
An old man shook my hand
He said I saw what you did
    That was beautiful and grand

To rescue a child in distress
Was what her poppa always did
    He was a police officer
Always helped others even as a kid.

    Forever changing

    Some live at sea level
    Some are rocked by quakes
    Some have assisted living
    Some live close to wakes
    Some live alone
    Some live on a phone
    Some live by a lake
    Some give and take
    Some give their all
    Some answer the call
    Some build friendships
    Some build walls
    Some build technology
Some a load of cod Ology

Greetings to all have a great Summer.

    Hi Jo
Glad to see you’re keeping the site going with your poems
I’ve been very busy over the last couple of months with all my clubs and trips.
I will put a bit of time aside to catch up on all that goes on on our Cabra Site.
I will share my little poem with you before I go.

    The Choice is yours

We learn a lesson in our life
that all’s not as it seems
We take a road to happiness
just like those in your dreams
But no matter how we try
Some paths the don’t work out
Confused and lost at every turn
You want to scream and shout
But it’s not all doom and gloom
You can make a choice that’s right
To brighten up your darkest time
Like the moon that shines at night
For life can be a roulette wheel
Each spin is win or lose
Just think before you place your bet
    It’s yours alone to choose
As life is such a mixture
Of joy and fears and tears
It’s a challenge for you overcome
As you fumble through the years

    Take care xxx
    Tony G

  8. Joon 20 Jun 2019 at 1:57 am

Farewell Andromeda I heard that song one time
Johnny Cash sang walk the line
    Patsy Cline sang faded love
One line mentioned the mating of the doves
Woody Guthrie sang his way through the dust bowl
    On trains in box cars
    Much like a rolling Stone

    Glen Miller and Vera Lynn
Did some swing, and got us over the white Cliffs of Dover
While others helped to nurse us
    After wars were over

    Music can be a healer
While reminding us of times past
I’m glad it’s still part of life
    And Alexa I can blast

    Technology connected people
    Now it’s connecting gadgets
    And every household thing
    When the power goes
    There’ll be no more bing

    So treasure your family
    And all your close friends
    Write them a note
    Go back to a pen

Life now seems to fit in your pocket
With your DNA and bills and credit
Most treasured of all can be a letter
It’s sheer joy when you get it.

Nice to see a little activity on here.
    Greetings to one n all.

Things that meant the world to us.
Things that meant more fun and play
Things today don’t mean the same
We did so much in our own special way.
The plot was a veggie patch
Today it could mean much worse
The compound was near Dingle road
And we could play on it or walk around.
Nowadays its well guarded and guns or dogs
    Do their rounds
The roundabout was on Carnlough Rd,
    The lads played football
    Nowadays we drive around them
    Depending on who’s call
The phone box was handy for making a call
Now the phone fits in your pocket
    And causes havoc to all.
Back in the day if we checked out
It usually meant you were dead
Today we Q in lines till our feet turn to led.

    Cheerio all

    Hello MC
    Hello all,
    Great to read few updates.
Hope all are holding up. Good wishes to all.
Recovery and health care to all.

    Some of you are cruising
    Some are snoozing
    Some are on the mend
    Some going round the bend
    Some have tranquility
    Some have activity
    Some have travels galore
Some sitting by the sea shore
    Some in Devon and Spain
    Some in sunshine and rain
    Some use pencil and pen
Some do so for the greater good

    Good nite all.

    Hello Martin

The new church opened in Dec 1953 (66 years ago and not 63 as I mentioned )
You were probably baptised in the church of Christ the King which was classed as a parish church, where baptisms only took place.I hope you find this information is correct

    Best wishes

(Hi Dermot, one of my brothers was baptised in the old tin church on Ballygall Road, Finglas…MC)

  12. Fiona mongeyon 21 May 2019 at 8:37 pm

    Hello Martin,

Hope you are well. My daughter lives in London and is trying to buy a copy of your
book called Tell me a story Cabra remembered. It comes up as unavailable. Would you know where she could get a copy.
Hope you like this photo, its hard to believe the church was opened 63 years ago.

    Best wishes,

    Dermot Mongey

ps you can view photo at cabrahistory@yahoo.com

(Hello Dermot, hope you are keeping well. I always thought that I was baptised in the new church but it must have been in the old Tin Church or somewhere else as I was born in 1951…)

I’ve been hiking up across the Dublin/Wicklow mountains every chance I get and the doctors can’t understand why I showed no symptoms of heart trouble. I blame it on all them greasy stews the Ma’ used to feed us on. Doing better than expected and still going strong…MC)

    Hi All

Well a lot of water has gone under the bridge since I was last on here.
At the moment the Wife and I are feelin Fine.
But isn’t funny when we get to our age the Doctors are determined to find a problem
Three weeks ago just went to get my Tablets changed .
I ended up going through all sorts of tests just waiting for results now.
Booked up for a Cruise in June but cant get Insurance till we clear all theses checks.
Well Jo love your Poem yes Spring and Summer are my favourite Seasons.
God remember our School Holidays in Cabra West we were never in from Sunrise to Sunset,
Up to the Broomer and Baths then up the Fields as far a Ashtown looking for Birds Nests or in the Silverspoon catching Tadpoles and Frogs.
We also had our 6d Fishing Net for Pinkeens..
. We did all that without a penny to our name if you got a few pence we got our Sweets or Lemonade from the Women on Kilkernan Road (There always was women selling stuff from front room.
The Summers used to last for ages and we had some cracking weather then .My best one was 1947 after that Terrible Winter.
Maybe you had a better Summer that you remember let us know.
    Well that’s all for now,
Goodbye and God Bless you All.

  19. Joon 08 Apr 2019 at 9:31 pm

    spring is here
    With April showers
    Some fresh flowers
    Birthdays and dances
    To refresh our chances
    Renew our health
    Earth tones and glances
Between the ups and downs of life
I am glad that some things
    Are just right.

    Waterfalls and rainbows
    Lighthouses and coastlines
    History and stories
    Sobering glory
    Driftwood and charcoal
    Private beaches
    Walking along at sunrise
    Sometimes at sunset
    Hawaii I shall never forget.

    Hello all,
Not sure the posts ever manage to get through. But if they do
    Hello to everyone
    Kinest regards.

Ah Good to see the site is up and running as could only see my last one from Jan for awhile but guessing cause you were in hospital Martin, hope you are having a speedy recovery and doing well.
Spring is in the air and it’s getting a little warmer so can’t wait to get out in the garden here in Ontario.
Had sad news of another O’Malley Cabra cousin passing today, even if we never met these cousins, Joan O’Malley/O’Shea it’s sad to hear and last month other members of the O’Malley Clan: Eddie O’Malley in Australia and last year Eddie O’Malley here in Canada all from my fathers 3 brothers who lived in Cabra Lord Rest them all.
Have been having some good results with dna ancestry so it keeps me out of trouble on the colds days. Enjoy the 6nations Rugby except when Ireland lost but now hoping Ireland qualify for the Euro’s 2020 and enjoying the soccer matches.
Have a good Spring where ever ye are and Enjoy.
    Rita O’Malley
(Hello Rita, as always, great to hear from you. When I told the doctor I had Royal Blood he laughed at me. He’s lucky the Da’ wasn’t standing to him or he’d have gotten a box or two as my Da’ always told us of his Royal Blood because his grandfather was born near the Hill of Tara…MC)

    Hi ALL
Well its been a while since I was on got a bit of news for you all.
Im reading a great Book About growing up in Dublin.my Thanks to MartinCoffey for sending it to me .
Its by Eamonn Mac Thomas great Historian on Dublin only thing its mostly about the South Side.
He does go into the City Centre pointing out all the Landmarks.
As you read it you realise we can all identify with everything at that time.
If you go on You Tube there is a few Programs by RTE hosted by Eamonn.
Also on You Tube is a Modern View on Moore Street (I was very disappointed).
The Moore Street from my day is all gone Stallholders all gone.
Looking at it now you would be a Stanger in your own town.
Immigrants have taken over it even the shops are owned by Asians ,
Only Buckleys Butchers left but the Film is few years old so that might be gone now,.
On a different subject there was a Marvellous Incident the other day .
Bus going across O Connell BRIDGE when the Bus Driver Suffered a Heart Attack.
One of the passengers was a Nurse on her way to the Mater.
She got the Driver out of the cab and administered CPR ( done a great job keeping him alive).
He is now doing well in Hospital the Doctors said its all down the Nurse been so quick.
    Lucky Man
    Well that’s all for Now.
    Goodbye and God Bless

    Hi All
Long time no speak I have been on Cabra Site on FB most of the time .
As you all may know our Friend Martin has just been to Hospital last week.
Had a procedure to help a Heart Valve TG everything went fine and he is back climbing Trees AGAIN.
Had some great conversations with Des O Neill reminiscing about Cabra West .
We have opened up a Post to trace all Cabra Folks all over the WORLD.
Amazing to see how we all ended up over the years all with our own Families.
But no matter where we are we still put Cabra and Dublin as our Home.
That goes for our Children too my Children loved Cabra and Dublin.
Feel a bit sorry to hear the Family Home in Cabra has been sold off .
Always great when our Parents were still around it was always Home to Dublin for the Summer.
When we go back and see how small our Houses were how did they Rear a Family of there.
Particularly Big Families like 14 in Coffey Household .
We had some Great Hooleys in our house and on the Road.
No Big Hotels for Weddings just Big Marquee out the back and all the Neighbours helping out. One doing Cakes the others doing the Food (Chickens Bits all over the place).
Well that’s all from me Folks.
Till we get back together Goodbye and God Bless
    SHAY JORDAN (Ex Mulroy and Annamoe}

    Cabra’s Cyber Years By/Tony Gorman
Imagine those days way back in the past
If you were to go back for a while
    Our parents gladly chatting away
Telling stories that made us all smile
And outside our friends playing all of their games
As the skipping ropes twirled in the air
And us boys looking on with hopes of a kiss
But alas it might end in despair
What beauties they were like a true fragrant rose
One kiss and you’d do summersaults
But as boys at the time it was just puppy love
And giving our hearts was one of our faults
Our friends were of an unmistakeable lot
For we bonded so well in a way
And throughout our years we’d never forget
That our friendships was destined to stay
And the girls through the years they blossom in age
And they married new loves that they found
Some lads from Cabra where we grew up
Some sailed overseas to new ground
As the world was their oyster, they travelled afar
To Canada, Australia and the States
    The Hanna’s, La Combre’s, Stanley’s and Gilmer’s as well
But through the years they remained best of mates
For we never forget those friends of old
As we disappear back to our past
The only regrets we have about this
When we’re there that our time doesn’t last
But back to today in a computerised world
The posts from us all show on screen
And it’s great to see how our lives have transpired
A technology that in our youth was unforeseen
So hello to all of my old Cabra friends
As we converse in our new Cyber way
And I’m wishing you all happiness in great store
When the chimes they ring out New Years Day

To all my friends on Facebook Happy New Year

    Hello all,
Nice one Tony. Hello to everyone.
    Hope all are keeping well.
Hope you all have a peaceful homespun Christmas.
Without a doubt Christmases past come to mind.
The messenger boys doing the rounds.
I’m sure some had tough times others tender times
But we were all glad to have what we needed.
Grateful for any gift no matter how small.
Few sweets n few pennies in our stocking.
Our own washed socks or maybe a new pair .
Ribbons blessed to have new ribbons in our hair.
Likewise grateful for grub n a pudding n custard.
    Greetings to you all.
Have a lovely Christmas and good health .
    Peace to all.
    Kindest regards to everyone everywhere.
Thinking of loved ones near and far and all
Who have gone ahead of us.
To me they are angels who have earned their wings.
    All are cherished.

Extra hello to all my family and all on here.
    Love Jo.

    My Christmas Poem
Be at one with life By/Tony Gorman

Christmas time and bells start to chime
    Ringing out the festive joys
And town lights are lit and Santa will sit
In a grotto giving children some toys

It’s that time of the year that brings us such cheer
As we drink and eat our Christmas Day feast
There are those in the cold like a forgotten soul
Sheltering in doorways till the festivities cease

And others with no one who are alone in their head
Searching for answers of things done or said
Wondering how a lifetime could bring them to this
A heart filled with loneliness and a time to reminisce

And those who’s bereaved lets offer a prayer
For them and their loved ones who’s in heavenly care
And to those in distress worrying how will they cope
Try hard to help them and give them some hope

Take a look in a mirror and see what you see
If I was alone would someone help me
Then open your heart and invite people in
The homeless and lonely then let Christmas begin

Anyway hello to all you girls n boys everywhere.
I’m off out to get a few messages. Need to top up the pantry and the fridge.
We never had a fridge in our house growing up.
God bless the frozen parlour hearthstone .
Milk stayed cold by the front door. On first step on stairs.
Jelly was set sat night to go with custard on Sunday.
    Cheerio all.

Well Thanksgiving in Canada is not as big as USA but fun anyway when we get to spend it family or friends. Just over Halloween and in our neck of the woods is lovely and quiet mostly old farts like ourselves but get to see lots of grandkids photos over the net. My Dublin pal Mary had about 20kids come by in Scarborough Ont and a Dublin cuz told me no one came by there place and another friend in Dublin said it was like Bombs going over her home most of the night.
Lots of Rain this last week and too cold yet but after that long hot humid summer I don’t mind. Hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving Jo and keep up the good work Martin with all the stories of Cabra.

    Martha Eastwood came to mind
As I stirred my pot of stew
    Stew houses and soup kitchens
    Came into my view
    Autumn leaves falling along
    The quarry road
    A toddlers school bag seemed
    Like a heavy load.
Four generations still walk those roads
    Maybe even five
Humble beginnings sustain us deep inside.

Off now to have some comfort food
    A decent Dublin stew.
Greetings to one n all from the other wild west.

    Thanks Rita ,
I did try that but it had lots of mumbo jumbo too.
Thanks. Some of our family are in Dublin to see family.
I didn’t make it this time.
Maybe in spring ill try to get over. Would love to get to see my sister’s in UK too.

Hello Tony G. Thanks for update. I forgot to tell you Stephen was huge into photography. His all time passion.
His dad told us he donated his eyes. It touches us all deeply
That someone else will see through his eyes. I’m lost for words.
Perhaps you may find some words to share.
You are very gifted that way.

    Hello to all
    Thinking of everyone

    Thanks Martin,
Sure is interesting that you found her photo that sure is a bonus , one time I was lead to believe a GGGrandfather Daniel O’Malley was sent to Oz with 2 brothers but it was the wrong Daniel but made a friend there who was trying to find her hubby’s O’Malley line we were both very disappointed that there was no connection but it sure was a great Story.

    Hi from Canada Jo,
Yes I noticed that sometimes you can only see a few posts 3 at the moment which is a shame as I don’t go on it too much and love to read stuff that I may have missed, thought I must be pressing the wrong buttons, maybe Martin can figure it out.
Always busy with the Ancestor searching keeps me out of trouble ha ha. Hope Greg has some luck at finding his I work on so many trees from both sides of our clan that I make my self dizzy at times, my eldest done his DNA on Ancestry he is busy with a young family so I set up his tree ,he has has some interesting matches even from the good O’Malley Cabra cousins, but nothing that I don’t know I am still hitting the brick wall on my Grandfather O’Malley side, sure would love to see a photo of him as died way before I was born.
Happy Halloween to all , I even seen Christmas hitting the stores over here, Anyway weather not too bad up here after a very Hot & Humid Summer, leaves are just starting to change colour, was at a great wedding a few wks back and a crowd from Ireland/Uk over so it made for a great time meeting folks from the Homeland.
    Slan for now
    Rita O’Malley McMahon
(Hello Rita, my Granny Burke from Broombridge spoke very little about her mother and we never knew what she looked like. In recent times I found her photograph, on her Prison Record. She had served 5 years for her part in a murder/manslaughter here in Dublin. Her sister served 7 years for the same offence. I was however delighted at finding her photo and that of her sister as well. So, you never know…’ MC)

    Hello Rita,
Lots of fun when doing family tree.
Branches going in every direction. Think I’ll be exploring
    Scandinavia next.
Hope all are well up there in Canada.
I have a lot of trouble with this site lately.
Not sure what else makes it on here.
It only shows me one post at a time .
It use to show a few. Sometimes 2.
Anyway I’m sure it’s all out there in the cloud.
Happy Halloween to one and all. Oct just around the corner.
    Greetings from USA.
