‘I found a Make…’
When I was growing up in Cabra West it was most unusual to find money on the ground. Any money we found we used to call it a ‘Make’ but only if it was coins. If you found anything other than coins you called it your ‘Lucky Day’. I found a ten shilling note one time around near the Cabra Grand Picture House and when I got home I gave it to the Ma’, she was delighted with it. Now when I told her that the Priest had said if we found any money on the ground we should put it into the ‘Poor Box’ in the church but she didn’t agree with the Priest on that one. ‘We’ve a poorer box here’ she said and sent me off with the ten bob to the shops for a Large Turnover and a half pound of Brawn…
