Love on the Dole
This is the site of the old Drumcondra Grand Cinema. A part of the original cinema building can be seen from across the road. Its possibly the original projector room and balcony area of the cinema. One particular film shown here was the 1941 movie ‘Love on the Dole’ starring Debra Kerr and Clifford Evans. One other actress in that film was Marie O’Neill who was born in Dublin in 1885. She died in Belfast in 1952. Marie appeared in no less than fifty big screen films mostly playing the part of an Irish woman. ‘Love on the Dole’ was about a young lady from Lancashire who decides to be a rich bookmaker’s mistress. It’s set in 1930s England and focuses on a family of four where the father works in a coal mine. The daughter works in a mill and falls in love with a factory worker, but he is killed after getting involved in a fight during a demonstration. She then meets someone else and she gets him to give jobs to her dad and brother, who have both been made redundant…has anyone out there seen this film?
