‘Our dog’s name was Darkie…’

Isn’t it gas all the same how things have changed over the years. There’s your poor man now having to walk his oul dog on a lead, we only ever tied an oul rope around ours. We never had  a lead on our dog years ago. And I well remember the time when it was said that  all dogs had to have a collar on them with a name tag. Well our Da’ said he wasn’t paying for it and so did the Ma’. You see, the dog belonged to the brother and the Da’ said he’d have to pay for it. The poor oul dog didn’t have a say in it at all. Could you imagine it all the same and the dog up and saying ‘Ah here, cut it out. I’m not wearing a collar. Is it a Priest you think I am or what. No, you’re barking up the wrong tree there if you think I’m going to wear a collar…’ Anyway, in the heel of the hunt the brother sent me for a walk into Woolworth’s in Henry street to buy a dog collar with a name thing on it and to get it engrave wit the name ‘Darky Coffey’. Now when the brother came home from work that evening he took one look at the dog tag and said ‘You eejit, you never got the address on it’. Well I ups and says ‘But the dog knows where it lives’. That’s when the brother lost it…but needless to say I was never sent to town for a message ever again. And did we ever have to carry around little plastic bags to pick up the dog’s leavin’s? Not at all, we picked them up alright and threw them at each other for the craic. God help the poor oul dogs of today, they have an awful life, they can’t roam around the roads anymore and you never see them getting stuck to each other either, what’s the world coming to at all…?
