Reid’s, gone but not forgotten…
Earlier today I made my way across the city to the New Cabra Road. I had received an invitation yesterday from George and Yvonne Reid to attend the last open day of their family business. George had spoken to me of mixed emotions on the closure of a business that was in his family for 79 years. Modern living and giant supermarkets had moved in to the area and was muscling most family run places out into the cold. The Reid’s however had decided to retire while they still had some good years left and to spend time with their family. When I arrived at the shop there was quite a crowd already inside and there was lots of laughter and good old Cabra banter going on. Without exception, everyone I spoke to had only good to say about the Reid family and their goodness to the local community over many years. While George was still busy ringing the Till Yvonne was ever the model hostess offering glasses of wine, soft drinks, sandwiches and cake to all and sundry. People came from all quarters of Cabra and beyond to witness the end of an era. The peoples of the Cabra History.Com website would like to take this opportunity to wish George and Yvonne a long life, good health and happiness in your future…
